The first-generation iPhone was described as a “revolution” for the mobile phone industry and subsequent models have also garnered praise. iPhone has been credited with popularizing the smartphone and slate form factor, and with creating a large market for smartphone apps, or “app economy.”

The first-generation iPhone unveiled to the public on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld 2007 convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The iPhone incorporated a 3.5-inch multi-touch display with few hardware buttons, and ran the iPhone OS operating system with a touch-friendly interface, then marketed as a version of Mac OS X. It launched on June 29, 2007, at a starting price of US$499 in the United States, and required a two-year contract with AT&T.

The first-generation iPhone featured a Samsung 32-bit ARM microprocessor, underclocked from its stock 620 MHz to a slower 412 MHz to increase battery life. The iPhone also included several sets of sensors, including an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, and an ambient light sensor. Similar to the iPod Touch, the iPhone also featured a 3.5 millimeter auxiliary headphone jack. The phone also had a 3.7 V 1400 mAh Lithium-ion battery built in it.

It was discontinued on July 15, 2008 with iOS 3.1.3 as the last update of the operating system for the device.

iPhone 3G was announced on July 11, 2008, at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2008. Apple expanded its launch-day availability to twenty-two countries, and it was eventually released in 70 countries and territories. The iPhone 3G introduced faster 3G connectivity, and a lower starting price of US$199 (with a two-year AT&T contract). iPhone 3G was discontinued on June 7, 2010 with iOS 4.2.1 as its last operating system.

iPhone 3GS was the successor of iPhone 3G that was announced on June 8, 2009, at WWDC 2009, and introduced video recording functionality. The new features of the iPhone 3GS are mainly internal changes regarding speed. The iPhone 3GS was reportedly twice as fast as its predecessor. Though in addition to the upgrades mainly regarding performance, various software features were also introduced exclusively to the iPhone 3GS such as video recording, voice control, and digital compass.

iPhone 3GS was discontinued on June 24, 2010 for 16 and 32 GB version and on September 12, 2012 for 8 GB version. It got an update for the operating system up to iOS 6.1.6.

iPhone 4 was announced on June 7, 2010, at WWDC 2010, and introduced a redesigned body incorporating a stainless steel frame and a rear glass panel. At release, the iPhone 4 was marketed as the “world’s thinnest smartphone”; it uses the Apple A4 processor, being the first iPhone to use an Apple custom-designed chip. It introduced the Retina display, having four-times the display resolution of preceding iPhones, and was the highest-resolution smartphone screen at release; a front-facing camera was also introduced, enabling video calling functionality via FaceTime.

iPhone 4 was discontinued on September 10, 2013 with iOS 7.1.2 as its last operating system.

iPhone 4S was announced on October 4, 2011, and introduced the Siri virtual assistant, a dual-core A5 processor, and an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording functionality. It uses a dual-core model that is integrated with the Apple A5 SoC in the same way as the iPad 2. Apple claims that the iPhone 4S has up to seven times faster graphics than the iPhone 4; this was corroborated by Epic Games president Mike Capps. There was an improvement in interactive multimedia applications compared to its predecessor.

iPhone 4S was discontinued on September 20, 2012 for 32 and 64 GB and on September 10, 2014 for 16 GB. It got an operating system updated up to iOS 9.3.6.

iPhone 5 was announced on September 12, 2012, and introduced a larger 4-inch screen, up from the 3.5-inch screen of all previous iPhone models, as well as faster 4G LTE connectivity. It also introduced a thinner and lighter body made of aluminum alloy, and the 30-pin dock connector of previous iPhones was replaced with the new, reversible Lightning connector. It featured a taller 4-inch screen with a nearly 16:9 aspect ratio, the Apple A6 system-on-chip, LTE support, and Lightning, a new compact dock connector which replaced the 30-pin design used by previous iPhone models. This was the second Apple phone to include its new Sony-made 8 MP camera, which was first introduced on the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 was discontinued on September 10, 2013 with iOS 10.3.4 as its last operating system.

iPhone 5C was unveiled on September 10, 2013, and released on September 20, 2013, along with its higher-end counterpart, the iPhone 5S. It was a lower-cost device that incorporated hardware from the iPhone 5, into a series of colorful plastic frames; thus, the “c” in the iPhone 5C’s name stands for Color. It is made up of a unibody hard-coated polycarbonate body with a steel-reinforced frame, which also acts as an antenna. It uses a system on chip (SoC), called the Apple A6, the same chip that powered the iPhone 5. The SoC comprises a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a tri-core PowerVR SGX543MP3 running at 266 MHz. It features a 4-inch Retina and multi-touch display. It uses a Nano SIM card.  The rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a charge capacity of 1510mAh is slightly improved upon iPhone 5’s 1440mAh battery. It is rated at ≤225 hours of standby time and ≤8 hours of talk time. It is integrated and cannot be replaced by the user.

iPhone 5C was discontinued on September 9, 2014 with iOS 10.3.3 as its last operating system.

iPhone 5S was announced on September 10, 2013. It has vastly upgraded internal hardware. It introduced the A7 64-bit dual-core system-on-chip, the first 64-bit processor to be used on a smartphone, accompanied by the M7 “motion coprocessor.” It featured a redesigned home button with Touch ID, a fingerprint recognition system which can be used to unlock the phone and authenticate App Store and iTunes Store purchases. The camera was also updated with a larger aperture and a dual-LED flash optimized for different color temperatures. Earphones known as EarPods were included with the 5S, and Apple released accessories including a case and a dock. It had a 4-inch display, similar to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C. 

iPhone 5S was discontinued on September 9, 2014 for 64 GB version and on March 21, 2016 for 16 and 32 GB version. It got an operating system updated up to iOS 12.5.7.

iPhone 6 was announced on September 9, 2014, and released on September 19, 2014. It includes larger 4.7 inch displays, a faster processor, upgraded cameras, improved LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity and support for a near field communications-based mobile payments offering. It has a thickness of 6.9 millimeters (0.27 in), being Apple’s thinnest phone to date. It features a 6.91 Wh (1,810 mAh) battery. It includes an Apple A8 system-on-chip, and an M8 motion coprocessor—an update of the M7 chip from the iPhone 5S. The expanded LTE connectivity on the iPhone 6 is improved to LTE Advanced, with support for over 20 LTE bands (seven more than the iPhone 5s), for up to 150 Mbit/s download speed, and VoLTE support. iPhone 6, along with 6 Plus, is the first iPhones to be equipped with a barometer sensor.

iPhone 6 was discontinued on September 9, 2015 for 128 GB version, on September 7, 2016 for 16 and 64 GB version, and September 12, 2018 for 32 GB version. This series still gets the latest update of the operating system. 

Advantages:

iPhone 6 has brilliant design, better battery life compared to 5S, and great camera quality. 

Disadvantages:

iPhone 6’s chassis was susceptible to bending under pressure, such as when carried tightly in a user’s pocket.

iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 6 Plus was announced on September 9, 2014, and released on September 19, 2014. It includes larger 5.5 inch displays, a faster processor, upgraded cameras, improved LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity and support for a near field communications-based mobile payments offering. It has a thickness of 7.1 mm (0.28 in). It features a 11.1 Wh (2,915 mAh) battery. It includes an Apple A8 system-on-chip, and an M8 motion coprocessor—an update of the M7 chip from the iPhone 5S. The expanded LTE connectivity on the iPhone 6 is improved to LTE Advanced, with support for over 20 LTE bands (seven more than the iPhone 5s), for up to 150 Mbit/s download speed, and VoLTE support.  Its camera has optical image stabilization. The front-facing camera was also updated with a new sensor and f/2.2 aperture, along with support for burst and HDR modes.

iPhone 6 Plus was discontinued on September 7, 2016 but still got the latest update of the operating system.

Advantages:

iPhone 6 Plus has optical image stabilization in its camera and has slightly better battery life than iPhone 6.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 6 Plus’ design is uncomfortable to hold and harder to grip in comparison to other devices.

iPhone 6S Plus was introduced on September 9, 2015. It has a similar design to the iPhone 6 but includes updated hardware, including a strengthened 7000 series aluminum alloy chassis and upgraded Apple A9 system-on-chip, a new 12-megapixel rear camera that can record up to 4K video at 30fps (A first in the series), can take dynamic Live Photos, the first increase in front camera photo resolution since the 2012 iPhone 5, and also features for the first time front facing Retina Flash which brightens up the display three times of its highest possible brightness for selfies, 2nd generation Touch ID fingerprint recognition sensor, LTE Advanced support, and “Hey Siri” capabilities without needing to be plugged in. The iPhone 6S also introduces a new hardware feature known as “3D Touch,” which enables pressure-sensitive touch inputs.

iPhone 6S was discontinued on September 7, 2016 for 16 and 64 GB version and on September 12, 2018 for 32 and 128 GB version. It still got the latest update of the operating system.

Advantages: 

iPhone 6S has fast performance, better camera quality, and the addition of 3D Touch.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 6S has a battery issue.

iPhone 6S Plus was introduced on September 9, 2015. It is powered by the Apple A9 system-on-chip, which the company stated is up to 70% faster than Apple A8, and has up to 90% better graphics performance. It has 2 GB of RAM, twice as much as any previous iPhone, and also supports LTE Advanced. The Touch ID sensor on the 6S Plus was also updated, with the new version having improved fingerprint scanning performance over the previous version. The capacity of its non-user-replaceable battery is 2750 mAh. It features a standard 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack.

iPhone 6S Plus was discontinued on September 12, 2018 but still got the latest update of the operating system.

Advantages:

iPhone 6S Plus is awarded in the category of Editors’ Choice Gold Award because of its phone’s performance and the addition of 3D Touch.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 6S Plus’ battery capacity is slightly smaller than the previous model. 

iPhone SE 1st Generation

The first-generation iPhone SE was introduced on March 21, 2016. It shares the same physical design and dimensions as the iPhone 5S, but has similar internal hardware to the iPhone 6S, including the newer Apple A9 system-on-chip, greater battery capacity, and a 12-megapixel rear camera that can record up to 4K video at 30 frames per second. It can shoot Live Photos and has features like Retina Flash and the option to have “Hey Siri” activated without the need to be plugged into a power source. 

iPhone SE 1 was discontinued on March 21, 2017 for 16 and 64 versions and on September 12, 2018 for 32 and 128 GB versions. It still got the latest update of the operating system.

Advantages:
iPhone SE 1 has good quality of battery life and still has a headphone jack. It has a small design which is a highly pocketable phone.

Disadvantages:

iPhone SE 1 has a similar design to iPhone 5 and 5S.

iPhone 7 was announced on September 7, 2016, which introduced larger camera sensors, IP67-certified water and dust resistance, and a quad-core A10 Fusion processor utilizing big.LITTLE technology; the 3.5mm headphone jack was removed, and was followed by the introduction of the AirPods wireless earbuds. Its overall design is similar to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. Changes introduced included new color options (Matte Black and Jet Black), a new capacitive, static home button, and revised antenna bands. The device’s internal hardware received upgrades, including a heterogeneous quad-core system-on-chip with improved system and graphics performance, upgraded 12 megapixel rear-facing cameras with optical image stabilization on all models. The front camera is the first in the series with 1080p (Full HD) video resolution.

iPhone 7 was discontinued on September 10, 2019 but still got the latest update of the operating system. 

Advantages:

iPhone 7 has improvements on the camera, increment on battery life and added water resistance.

Disadvantages: 

iPhone 7 lacks innovation on its build quality and has removed the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

iPhone 7 Plus was announced on September 7, 2016. It uses the Apple A10 Fusion 64-bit system-on-chip, which consists of two low-power cores and two high-power cores. iPhone 8 Plus was announced on September 12, 2017, in Apple’s first event held at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park. It contains the Apple A11 Bionic system-on-chip, a hexa-core processor that the company says features two performance cores that are 25% faster than those found in the iPhone 7’s A10 processor and four efficiency cores that are 70% faster than those in the prior model. It also features an Apple-designed graphics processing unit 30% faster than prior units, with the same level of performance as the A10 at half the power. It has glass backs instead of the complete aluminum housing found on prior models, enabling the use of Qi inductive charging. The phones are rated IP67 for water resistance and dust resistance.  

iPhone 8 Plus was discontinued on April 15, 2020 but still got the latest update of the operating system. 

Advantages:

iPhone 8 Plus has great camera quality and fast performance.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 8 Plus has no innovation in exterior design. 

iPhone X

iPhone X was launched on November 3, 2017. It introduced a 5.8-inch OLED “Super Retina” display with a “bezel-less” design, with a higher pixel density and contrast ratio than previous iPhones with LCD displays, and introduced a stronger frame made of stainless steel. It also introduced Face ID facial recognition authentication hardware, in a “notch” screen cutout, in place of Touch ID; the home button was removed to make room for additional screen space, replacing it with a gesture-based navigation system. It has two cameras on the rear. One is a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture, with support for face detection, high dynamic range and optical image stabilization. A secondary, telephoto lens features 2× optical zoom and 10× digital zoom with an aperture of f/2.4 and optical image stabilization. It also supports Qi-standard wireless charging.

iPhone X was discontinued on September 12, 2018 but still got the latest update of the operating system up until now. 

Advantages:

iPhone X has a new design, good build quality, great camera, fast performance, and the addition of Face ID feature. 

Disadvantages:

iPhone X has less durability and shorter battery life. 

iPhone XR

iPhone XR was announced on September 12, 2018.  It features the Apple A12 Bionic chip built with a 7 nanometer process. It has the “Smart HDR” computational photography system, and a significantly more powerful “Neural Engine.” It included a 6.1-inch LCD “Liquid Retina” display, with a “bezel-less” design similar to the iPhone X, but does not include a second telephoto lens; it was made available in a series of vibrant colors, akin to the iPhone 5C, and was a lower-cost device compared to the iPhone X and XS. It has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, which means it can be immersed in 1-meter deep water for up to 30 minutes.

iPhone XR was discontinued on September 14, 2021 but still got the latest update of the operating system up until now.

Advantages:

iPhone XR has more color choices and includes a USB-C to Lightning cable, which is compatible with increasingly prevalent USB-C charging sources.

Disadvantages:

iPhone XR has a low resolution and a low pixel per inch density. It does not include earphone and power adapter in its box. 

iPhone XS

iPhone XS was announced on September 12, 2018.  It has a design visually near-identical to the iPhone X but includes upgraded hardware, featuring the A12 Bionic chip built with a 7 nm process. It features a 5.85 inch (149 mm) OLED display (marketed as 5.8 inch) with a resolution of 2436 × 1125 pixels (2.7 megapixels) at 458 ppi and contains dual 12-megapixel rear cameras and one 7-megapixel front-facing camera. Its battery is a new single-cell L-shaped battery which lasts up to 30 minutes longer than iPhone X.  It has faster Face ID technology and is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance under IEC standard 60529, with Apple specifying a maximum depth of 2 meters and up to 30 minutes of submersion in water.

iPhone XS was discontinued on September 10, 2019 but still got the latest update of the operating system until now. 

Advantages:

iPhone XS has better camera quality and longer battery life.

Disadvantages:

iPhone XS has a similar design to the previous model, and the camera did not feature a night mode.

iPhone XS Max

iPhone XS Max was announced on September 12, 2018. It introduced a larger 6.5-inch screen which was the first plus-sized iPhone to have the newer reduced bezel form factor. It includes filming with stereo audio and strengthened water resistance. It has a larger battery capacity (3,174mAh) which lasts up to 1.5 hours longer than iPhone X. iPhone 11 was announced on September 10, 2019. It was the successor to the iPhone XR. It uses Apple’s A13 Bionic processor, which contains a third-generation neural engine. It gained an ultra-wide lens, enabling two-times optical zoom out, as well as larger batteries for longer battery life. It has an IP68 water- and dust-resistant rating along with dirt and grime, and is water-resistant up to 2 m (6.6 ft) for 30 minutes. iPhone 11 is the first smartphone with built-in ultra wideband hardware, via its Apple U1 chip. It is supplied with a 11.91 Wh (3,110 mAh) battery, a slight increase from the 11.21 Wh (2,942 mAh) found in the iPhone XR. It includes a dual-lens 12 MP rear camera array. It has one ƒ/2.4 ultra-wide-angle lens with a 120° field of view and 2× optical zoom out, and one ƒ/1.8 wide-angle lens.

iPhone 11 was discontinued on September 7, 2022 but still got the latest update of the operating system until now.

Advantages:

iPhone 11 has fast performance, long battery life, and great cameras.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 11 has a design that is aging quickly. It also does not include earphone and power adapter in the box. 

iPhone 11 Pro

iPhone 11 Pro was announced on September 10, 2019. It was the successor to the iPhone XS. It includes the triple-lens rear camera system and the A13 Bionic chip. It is Apple’s first iPhones to feature a “pro” designation, previously used only for larger Apple devices, such as the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. It is also the first generation of iPhones which include a Lightning to USB-C cable and that allows connection to the charger and to current Mac computers, in the box. It is rated IP68 water and dust resistant, and is resistant for 30 minutes at a depth of 4 meters. It is supplied with a 11.67 Wh (3,046 mAh) battery, a slight increase from the 10.13 Wh (2,658 mAh) found in the iPhone XS. iPhone 11 Pro has an automatic Night Mode allowing the camera to take brighter pictures with reduced noise in low light environments. 

iPhone 11 Pro was discontinued on October 13, 2020 but still got the latest update of the operating system until now. 

Advantages:

iPhone 11 Pro has improvements to the camera, display, and battery.

Disadvantages:

iPhone 11 Pro has a similar design to the previous model and slightly expensive for some. 

iPhone 11 Pro Max
